The fibers absorb many times their own weight in fluid and gel quickly at the wound bed, so the dressing stays in place rather than shifting. Because it forms a cohesive gel, AlgiSite M lifts away at dressing changes with minimal trauma and less pain than dry dressings that adhere to the tissue. It is well suited to moderately-to-heavily exuding wounds: pressure ulcers, leg and diabetic foot ulcers, donor sites, cavity wounds, and bleeding surface wounds where the alginate's hemostatic properties are an added benefit.

Match the dressing loosely to the wound size, cover with a secondary dressing or retention layer to hold moisture in, and change based on strike-through — typically as exudate slows. Note that alginates are intended for moist or draining wounds; they are not the right choice for dry wounds or those covered in hard eschar.
