Medline Avant Gauze Nonwoven Sponges

Avant Gauze from Medline is a nonwoven sponge made from a polyester/rayon blend rather than traditional cotton weave. That construction is the whole point: the blended fibers give these sponges more bulk and greater absorbency per ply than woven cotton gauze, while producing far less lint at the wound site — which matters when loose fibers can contaminate a wound or interfere with healing. Clinicians who prefer nonwoven for wound cleaning, packing, prepping, and dressing changes reach for Avant precisely because it holds up wet without shredding.

This collection covers the sizes and configurations most facilities and home caregivers actually stock. The 4 x 4 inch, 3-ply nonsterile sponges (NON25443) are the everyday workhorse for general wound care, cleaning, and applying antiseptics — bought in bulk where a sterile field isn't required. The 2 x 2 inch nonsterile sponges (NON25224) suit smaller wounds and tight areas. For post-surgical and drain-site care, the Sterile Nonwoven Drain Sponges, 2 x 2 inch, 6-ply (NON256001) come pre-slit to fit around tubes, catheters, and tracheostomy sites, packaged two per sterile pack to protect the field.

A common question: sterile or nonsterile? Use sterile sponges like the drain sponges for open surgical wounds, invasive sites, and anything requiring an aseptic field; nonsterile sponges are appropriate for cleaning intact skin, prepping, and routine care where sterility isn't required — and they cost considerably less by the case.

If nonwoven isn't what you need, compare woven options in Gauze Sponges, browse absorbent post-op pads in ABD Gauze Pads, or see the full Gauze category for rolls, dressings, and specialty products.
