ColoKids Pediatric Ostomy Barriers
Fitting an ostomy appliance on a child is nothing like fitting one on an adult. Small bodies, softer skin, tiny stomas that change shape as a child grows, and the constant movement of an active toddler all demand a barrier built specifically for pediatric use. The ColoKids line from Coloplast is designed for exactly that — giving parents and pediatric nurses a dependable, gentle solution sized for the smallest patients.
At the center of this collection is the Coloplast ColoKids Pediatric Colostomy Barrier (2182), a flat, trim-to-fit skin barrier with a 40 mm flange and an adjustable opening from 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches. Because it's trim-to-fit, you cut the opening to match your child's stoma precisely — important when a stoma is still maturing or when standard pre-cut sizes simply don't line up. The pectin-based adhesive is formulated to be kind to delicate skin while holding securely, and the standard-wear synthetic resin construction balances staying power with the gentle removal young skin needs.
Parents often ask how to protect against leaks and skin breakdown around a child's stoma. The answer starts with an accurate opening and a snug, comfortable seal — the barrier should hug the stoma without pinching. Measure the stoma at each change (they can shrink in the weeks after surgery), trim slightly larger than the stoma itself, and check the skin at every change for redness or irritation. A properly fitted barrier is the single biggest factor in keeping skin healthy and keeping your child comfortable and active.
