Gebauer's Pain Ease Topical Anesthetic Spray

Gebauer's Pain Ease is a non-drug, topical vapocoolant spray used to temporarily relieve the minor pain and irritation of intact skin before needle procedures — injections, IV starts, blood draws, and vaccinations — as well as minor sports injuries. Because it works instantly on contact and requires no wait time, it's a practical alternative to numbing creams that need up to an hour to take effect, making it a favorite in busy clinics, pediatric offices, and school health rooms.

The formula is a blend of pentafluoropropane and tetrafluoroethane — a non-flammable, ozone-friendly propellant system that cools the skin surface to dull the sensation of the stick. Onset is immediate, and the numbing effect lasts up to about a minute, which is enough to complete most quick procedures. Unlike its ethyl chloride counterpart, Pain Ease is non-flammable, an important safety distinction near electrocautery or other ignition sources.

We carry Pain Ease in two 30 mL spray patterns so you can match the applicator to the procedure. The Mist Spray (0386-0008-01) disperses a fine, wider spray ideal for broader areas or sensitive pediatric use, while the Medium Stream Spray (0386-0008-04) delivers a more targeted application to a precise site, such as directly over an injection point. Both are convenient single cans suited to individual patient use or point-of-care stocking.

A common question is how Pain Ease compares to Gebauer's other cooling products. If you need the traditional flammable formula or a different regulatory profile, see Gebauer's Ethyl Chloride. Application is straightforward: hold the can upright a few inches from clean, intact skin and spray for the recommended few seconds until the site turns white, then begin the procedure promptly. Pain Ease is not intended for use on open wounds or broken skin, and it should not be inhaled directly.
