Hominex Amino Acid-Modified Medical Food
Hominex is Abbott's specialized medical food line for managing homocystinuria and hypermethioninemia — inherited metabolic disorders where the body cannot properly process the amino acid methionine. Both formulas in this collection are methionine-free, giving families and clinicians a nutritional foundation that supports growth and development while helping keep plasma methionine and homocysteine within target ranges. Hominex must be used under the supervision of a physician or metabolic dietitian.
The collection covers two life stages. Hominex-1 is an unflavored, iron-fortified infant formula in powder form (14.1 oz can, item 67040), designed as the primary source of nutrition for infants diagnosed at birth through newborn screening. Hominex-2 (14.1 oz can, item 67042) carries the same methionine-free profile forward for older children and adults, providing 410 calories per can with the protein equivalent, vitamins, and minerals needed when a lifelong methionine-restricted diet is required.
A few things families commonly ask: Hominex-1 is prepared like a standard powdered infant formula but requires the addition of a small, dietitian-calculated amount of intact protein (breast milk or standard formula) to supply the limited methionine an infant still needs. Hominex-2 is typically mixed with water and taken as a supplement alongside a carefully measured low-protein diet. Because methionine tolerance varies by individual, dosing is always guided by regular blood monitoring and your metabolic team — these products are not meant to be self-prescribed.
Both cans are unflavored, so they can be combined with permitted foods or flavorings to improve acceptance, which matters for consistent daily intake over the long term.
