I-Valex Medical Food for Isovaleric Acidemia
I-Valex is Abbott's line of amino acid–modified medical foods formulated for the dietary management of isovaleric acidemia (IVA) and other disorders of leucine catabolism. These conditions require carefully restricted leucine intake, and the I-Valex range is designed to supply the protein equivalent, energy, vitamins, and minerals a person needs while keeping leucine out of the equation. Because these are medical foods for an inherited metabolic disorder, they should be used under the supervision of a physician or metabolic dietitian.
The line covers two life stages. I-Valex-1 is a leucine-free, iron-fortified infant formula in an unflavored 14.1 oz powder can, available individually or by the case of six — appropriate from birth for infants diagnosed with IVA. I-Valex-2 steps up the protein-to-energy ratio for older children and adults, delivering 410 calories per 14.1 oz can to support the higher protein needs and growth demands beyond infancy. Families managing IVA long-term typically transition from the -1 to the -2 formula as the individual matures, on the timeline their metabolic team advises.
A common question is why these products are unflavored: the neutral profile lets caregivers and clinicians mix precise measured amounts into feeds or combine them with a calculated allowance of standard formula or food, so leucine intake can be titrated exactly. Store powder cans sealed in a cool, dry place, and always reconstitute according to the prescribed recipe rather than a one-size-fits-all scoop count.
I-Valex is a specialized product, so having a reliable, in-stock source matters for continuity of care. We ship both single cans and cases to keep households and clinics supplied between appointments. If you manage other specialized or metabolic nutrition needs, you may also find relevant items in our ADH-P/I collection.
