Nosey Cups

A nosey cup solves a small but frustrating problem: drinking without tipping your head back. The cutout on one side of the rim clears the bridge of the nose, so the cup can be tilted to empty it while the chin stays level. That matters enormously for anyone who shouldn't extend their neck — people recovering from a stroke, living with dysphagia, managing limited neck mobility, or wearing a cervical collar. Keeping the head in a neutral or slightly forward position also lowers the risk of aspiration, which is why speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists recommend these cups so often.

Also called cutout cups or dysphagia cups, they let a drinker finish the last of a beverage without straining, and let a caregiver assist someone without asking them to lean back into an unsafe posture. Most are molded from durable, lightweight plastic that's easy to grip and comfortable to hold for people with reduced hand strength. Many are reusable and dishwasher-safe; check the manufacturer's guidance, since some are top-rack only and others are single-patient-use for infection control in facilities.

When choosing one, think about capacity, whether the rim cutout is deep enough for the individual's nose and posture, and whether a lid is needed. Some models pair with spouts or straws, and some are contoured or weighted for tremor control. For settings that need more than one at a time, a dual cup option can be a practical companion for serving two beverages or separating thickened and thin liquids.
