Because Optiflow prongs are intentionally larger and non-occlusive, they allow warmed, humidified gas to be delivered at flow rates well beyond standard oxygen cannulas while still permitting the patient to breathe, speak, and — where appropriate — eat. Correct sizing is the single most important step: prongs should fill roughly half the nostril, never seal it.
