PlastiCast Casting Tape

PlastiCast is a synthetic casting tape used for immobilizing fractures, sprains, and post-surgical extremities. Built from a knitted fiberglass substrate coated with a moisture-cured polyurethane resin, it sets quickly, cures to a rigid support, and weighs far less than the traditional plaster it replaces. For orthopedic clinics, urgent care, and emergency departments, that combination of speed and durability is exactly what makes synthetic casting the standard choice for most extremity casts.

Clinicians choosing a casting tape usually weigh a few practical things: how fast it sets, how strong the finished cast is, and how easy it is to lay down cleanly. Fiberglass tapes like PlastiCast reach functional strength within minutes and full weight-bearing strength within about half an hour, so patients can leave sooner. The material is also water-resistant once cured and X-ray translucent, which lets physicians monitor healing without removing the cast.

PlastiCast is typically stocked in a range of roll widths—commonly 2", 3", 4", and 5"—so a single product line covers everything from a pediatric wrist to an adult long-leg application. Narrower rolls conform more easily around joints and smaller limbs, while wider rolls build up strength quickly over the forearm, lower leg, or thigh. Rolls come individually foil-wrapped to keep the resin from curing prematurely, so open only what you need for the application in front of you.

A few technique reminders matter with any synthetic tape: wear gloves, since the resin bonds to skin; keep dip water cool to lukewarm to control set time; and apply over appropriate padding and stockinette rather than directly to the skin. Faster set times shorten the working window, so plan your wrap before immersing the roll.
