Prontosan Wound Irrigation & Cleansing Solutions

When a chronic wound stalls, biofilm is often the culprit — a stubborn layer of bacteria that shields itself from healing and standard cleansing. Prontosan is formulated to address exactly this problem. Built around the combination of polyhexanide (PHMB) and betaine surfactant, it works to loosen, penetrate, and lift biofilm and debris from the wound bed, helping to create the clean environment wounds need to progress toward closure.

Clinicians reach for Prontosan across a range of settings — pressure injuries, diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, surgical wounds, and burns. The betaine surfactant reduces surface tension so the solution can reach into crevices and under slough, while PHMB helps manage the microbial burden. The result is a gentle yet effective cleanse that supports the body's own healing without the cytotoxicity associated with harsher antiseptics.

The Prontosan line is generally available in two familiar forms: a pourable wound irrigation solution for flushing and soaking dressings, and a thicker wound gel that stays in place on the wound bed between dressing changes, extending contact time on hard-to-treat or cavity wounds. Many caregivers use the solution to moisten gauze or soak a wound for several minutes before irrigating, then apply the gel for ongoing management under a secondary dressing.

Prontosan is designed for repeated use over a course of care and is well tolerated on fragile skin, making it suitable for both facility protocols and home wound management guided by a clinician. Always follow the directions on the product label and your healthcare provider's wound care plan for contact time and frequency.
