Protouch Cast Padding & Synthetic Stockinette
Building a durable, comfortable cast starts with what goes on before the fiberglass or plaster. Protouch from Performance Health supplies the two undercast layers orthopedic clinics and casting techs reach for most: synthetic cast padding and tubular synthetic stockinette. Together they protect skin at bony prominences, wick moisture away from the limb, and give the finished cast a clean, cushioned edge that patients tolerate for weeks at a time.
The Protouch Synthetic Stockinette goes on first as a smooth tubular liner directly against the skin. It's compatible with both plaster and synthetic casting materials, comes non-sterile on economical 25-yard rolls, and is stocked in 2-inch (30-1002), 4-inch (30-1004), and 6-inch (30-1006) widths so you can match wrist, forearm, and lower-leg applications without bunching or excess bulk. Cut to length and it turns back over the cast edges for a finished, non-abrasive rim.
Over the stockinette goes Protouch Synthetic Cast Padding, available in 3-inch (A66133D) and 4-inch (A66143D) widths on 4-yard rolls. The synthetic fiber conforms smoothly around contours, resists clumping, and holds its loft to distribute pressure evenly—important for preventing the pressure sores and skin breakdown that lead to early cast changes.
A common question from technicians: how many layers? Most casts use two to three overlapping wraps of padding, with extra turns doubled over bony landmarks like the malleoli, olecranon, and heel. Matching padding width to stockinette width keeps the build even and speeds application.
