Vliwasorb Superabsorbent Wound Dressings

When a wound produces more exudate than a standard gauze pad or foam can hold, the result is predictable: strike-through, macerated skin around the wound edges, and dressing changes far more often than anyone wants. Vliwasorb from Lohmann & Rauscher is built for exactly these heavily draining wounds — leg ulcers, pressure injuries, dehisced surgical sites, and other moderate-to-highly exudating wounds where fluid management is the whole battle.

The technology behind these dressings is the sodium polyacrylate core (the same superabsorbent polymer used in absorbent hygiene products), sandwiched between polyethylene and polypropylene layers. That core locks fluid into the dressing and holds it under compression rather than letting it wick back onto the skin — a meaningful difference when the dressing sits under compression bandaging on a venous leg ulcer. The result is a drier peri-wound area, fewer changes, and better protection against maceration.

• The Vliwasorb 4 x 4 inch (ref. 24501) — a square, sterile dressing with a blue/white polyurethane backing, sized for smaller wounds or for use as a secondary absorbent layer.

The colored backing does more than identify the product — it signals the non-adherent side and helps with correct orientation during application, and it acts as a fluid-resistant barrier on the outer face. Vliwasorb is a primary or secondary dressing; for infected or cavity wounds, pair it with an appropriate contact layer or antimicrobial primary as your protocol directs.
