Voldyne Incentive Spirometers

Voldyne incentive spirometers are volumetric breathing exercisers designed to help patients maintain and restore lung capacity after surgery, during recovery from respiratory illness, or when prolonged bed rest raises the risk of atelectasis and pneumonia. By encouraging slow, sustained deep breaths, these devices keep the lower airways open and give patients—and their care teams—a clear, visible measure of inspiratory progress.

This collection features the Teleflex Voldyne line, including the Voldyne 5000 Incentive Spirometer (8884719009) with a 5,000 mL measured volume for adults, and the larger-capacity Voldyne 4000 mL Volumetric Exerciser (8884719010). Both use a clear vertical chamber with an easy-to-read volume scale and a separate flow indicator, so patients can see exactly how deeply they are inhaling and how steady their effort is. The adjustable goal marker lets clinicians set a target and track improvement session to session.

A common question from patients and caregivers is which capacity to choose. The 5000 mL unit is the standard for most adults recovering from abdominal or thoracic surgery, while the 4000 mL volume suits patients whose realistic inspiratory targets fall within that range or who benefit from a more attainable goal early in recovery. Technique matters more than the number itself: seal the lips around the mouthpiece, inhale slowly to raise the piston, hold at the top for two to three seconds, then relax—repeated as directed, often ten breaths per hour while awake.

Because they require no power and are single-patient devices, Voldyne spirometers are equally at home in the hospital, rehab setting, and after discharge. For related equipment and airway support, explore our broader Respiratory Care and Airway Management collections.
