Coloplast: The Clear Advantage

There are many reasons a male patient might need an external catheter to manage urinary incontinence, including limited mobility, overactive bladder, dementia or cognitive impairment, post-surgery requirements, or nighttime incontinence. Whatever the reason, having an external catheter that is comfortable and secure to wear and one that allows you to pursue your daily activities without worry is important. The Coloplast Clear Advantage external catheter offers advantages over internal catheters, including the following:

  • Reduces the risk of infection: Because the catheter is external, it doesn’t enter the urethra and therefore reduces the risk of infections called catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs).
  • Provides comfort and convenience: The Coloplast external catheter is comfortable and discreet and avoids the irritation and other complications that can accompany an internal catheter.
  • Is easy to use: It easily fits over the penis and connects to a collection bag using adhesives and specially designed underwear for a secure fit.
  • Provides a better solution for some conditions: Because the Coloplast catheter is easy to put on, it is a preferable solution for conditions such as an enlarged prostate that can make using an internal catheter difficult.
  • Delivers accident-free collection: The Coloplast external catheter collects urine in the drainage bag while keeping the skin dry, odor free and protected from accidents. The drainage bag can be discreetly attached to the leg under clothing or at the bedside for nighttime use.

Caring for Your Coloplast External Catheter

It’s important to keep your external catheter clean and in good working order. The condom sheath should be replaced every 24 hours to ensure protection against infection. Use an adhesive remover if needed and a warm cloth can also help ease the replacement of the catheter. The following are some additional tips:

  • Empty bags: Leg and bedside bags are reusable, but they should be emptied when they are half full. Add water to the bag and shake it to remove residue, then dump the water into the toilet.
  • Clean bags: Mix one part bleach to 10 parts water and flush the tubing. Fill the bag half full with this mixture and let it sit for 20 minutes before emptying it.
  • Rinse bags: Use warm water to rinse the collection bag, then let it air dry.
